Frequently asked questions

The things Asheville families ask us most — about treatment, first visits, and paying for care.

Getting Started

Do you charge for an initial visit?

No. As a courtesy to you and your family dentist, we'll always discuss the feasibility of braces or tooth straightening without charging a fee for the initial consultation.

At what age should my child first be seen?

As a rule of thumb, we like to evaluate young patients once the 6-year molars erupt and the front permanent teeth start to appear — usually between ages 6 and 8. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first visit by age 7.

Why evaluate patients so young?

Early evaluation isn't necessarily about starting treatment right away — it's about informing and observing. Identifying eventual needs early lets us time treatment perfectly, and in a small number of cases, begin gentle correction at the ideal moment.

How long will the first visit take?

Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your situation. We may do a visual exam and explain what we see, or suggest X-rays and full diagnostic records including photos to document the current position of your teeth.

Do you take patients transferring from out of town?

Yes. We handle a transferring patient much like a new patient — gathering complete diagnostic records to show current status, then proposing treatment to finish the work that's been started.

What's the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

An orthodontist is trained as a general dentist, then completes at least two additional years of full-time specialty training and earns a nationally recognized certificate. Orthodontists limit their practice to straightening teeth and dentofacial orthopedics.

Treatment & Retainers

Do you have adult patients?

Absolutely. A growing share of our patients are adults — according to the American Association of Orthodontists, about one in four orthodontic patients is an adult. Today's cosmetic appliances make adult treatment more comfortable and discreet than ever.

Can I schedule all my appointments after school or late in the day?

We reserve early and late slots for as many patients as possible, but some longer procedures need to happen between 9 and 3. We'll always do our best to work around your family's schedule.

Do you see patients for emergencies?

Yes. Our emergency contact information is posted on the website — see our Orthodontic Emergencies page for what to do and how to reach us.

Do I still need to be pre-medicated for the orthodontist?

If your dentist or physician has advised pre-medication before dental visits, yes — please continue to take it before orthodontic appointments as well.

Do retainers need to be worn after braces?

Yes. Retainers are typically worn full-time for about six months, followed by nighttime wear indefinitely. We'll review your personalized retainer schedule when your braces or aligners come off.

Why do teeth shift after braces or aligners?

Teeth move throughout life whether you've had orthodontic treatment or not — it's part of the natural aging process. That's exactly why we recommend wearing retainers indefinitely to protect your results.

Financing & Insurance

Can we make payments?

Yes. Whether or not you have insurance or a dental plan, we'll structure a convenient payment plan that lets you pay for treatment over a period that usually coincides with your time in braces or aligners.

How do you handle insurance?

After we verify your coverage, we'll bill and collect from your insurance carrier on your behalf. Please note that if coverage changes or ends, the patient remains responsible for the agreed-upon fee.

Do you take American Express, Mastercard, and Visa?

Yes — we accept all major credit cards, as well as debit cards.

Do you offer direct debit?

Yes. We can set up automatic direct debit, recurring credit-card posting, or online payments — whatever is easiest for you.

Do you charge interest?

No. Our in-house payment plans are interest-free.

Do you give family discounts?

We do. We offer special programs and fees when more than one member of the same family is in treatment.
